Artist’s Statement:

I follow ideas. For me, art making is an exploration in materials and concepts. I reflect. I record. I draw. I paint. I cut. I assemble. This process is inspired by the time I spent with my great grandmother as she made patchwork quilts. Often times, as a young boy, I found myself threading needles and sorting through her bags of colorful fabric scraps. I still enjoy searching, but the fabric has been replaced with hand painted and found papers. This way of using discarded or fragmented pieces to assemble something new has consistently found its way into my artistic practice whether it be drawing, painting or collage. The traditions, rituals, landscape, and memories of my southern upbringing are deeply rooted in my process and product.

The Profile Series is an ongoing collection of mixed media collages mounted on cradled panel. Conceived from a drawing in one of my sketchbooks, the profile allows me the subject I needed to experiment with color, texture and visual narrative.

Biography:

Cornell D. Jones is an artist and educator living in Hope Mills, North Carolina by way of Alabama. He received his M.F.A in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Along with exhibiting, he has been teaching art in a variety of educational settings for the past twenty years. His work has been included in exhibitions in New York and North Carolina. Recently, his work has been shown at the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County, Delta Arts Center, Greenhill Center for North Carolina Art and Ellington White CDC.
